It is imperative to control the environment in an indoor swimming pool in order to avoid excessive moisture build-up. Uncontrolled moisture build-up results in an extremely uncomfortable environment, saturated walls, roof and windows and resulting damage to the building.

Any of the outdoor pool water heating methods can be applied to indoor pools.

However, in addition, air in the pool hall requires heating to control the evaporation from the pools surface and enable effective dehumidification.

Air heating

By carefully balancing the water/air temperature balance, the evaporation from the waters surface can be controlled. The efficiency of the dehumidifier is maximized ensuring lower running costs.

Dehumidifier

Balancing the air/water temperature minimises the evaporation, but some moisture will still remain and this needs to be removed.

The conventional method of moisture removal was by energy inefficient and costly air extraction.

These days, a significantly more efficient method is the installation of a dehumidifier that re-circulates the pool hall air and removes the moisture from it. In so doing, it also recovers the latent heat of the moisture and puts it back into the pool water or air, thus reducing running costs further.

Fresh air

It is usually desirable to have a small amount of fresh air introduced into the pool area to create a more pleasant environment. This can be achieved either automatically within the dehumidification unit, or by installing a heat recovery fan in the pool hall.

System options

There are a number of alternative ways to achieve effective dehumidification. These range from wall-mounted dehumidifier with radiators in the pool hall, to fully ducted concealed systems.
